You're ignoring population growth. If we look at all eligible voters, Bush got 30.5% in 2004, McCain 28.1% in 2008, Romney 27.4% in 2012, Trump 27.2% in 2016.

But it doesn’t mean anything. Trump won. He got the votes he needed where he needed them to be. That shows a remarkable ability...and I think that’s what really annoys you; he disproved your theories about how elections are won. He does it again in 20 and everyone will copy.

Also: what would Hillary’s be compared to, say, Carter in ‘76? Bet it was also lower: perhaps Dems are driving people away, too? And maybe that’s what Trump saw and went poaching? I don’t know: but I guess it’s so, because I saw the chance 10 years ago.
