There's a sense of desperation among some of my friends in this. When I was catechized, it was partly out of my dad's sense of pride in our theological precision. But what I see now is parents desperate for their kids to know SOMETHING concrete about the faith.

You certainly are right, but no other institution on earth was founded by God specifically for that purpose. No other persons on earth but the apostles were specifically charged and commissioned by God in the flesh to teach and hand on what they’d learned.
