We've all had bad service that's directly related to the server. It's often clear and I feel no obligation to reward that at 20% or even 15%. That the whole purpose of the tip.

So what about tips on takeout orders? How much of a tip is just handing me a bag over the counter worth? For me that's a 10% baseline, assuming they even have the nerve to ask for it.

I don't remember 10% but I have no idea when or why it supposedly got bumped to 20%. And I see people claiming that's the minimum regardless of service, which is nonsense

Here we are: this is one of the few types of jobs that the pay is largely dependent on: 1. the feelings of the person being served (you the tipper) 2. tip is in proportion to the cost of employer services (Percentage of meal cost) This "system" is anachronistic & strange.
