Question you may know the answer to, where does the term “fuzz” come from when referring to the police? I hear it in old movies, but don’t know how it connects.

I was brought up that way too. Taught my daughter to use officer, police officer not cop.. cop is slang.

I tell my kids to say police officer/the police. "Cops" isn't derogatory per se... but it isn't respectful. But context matters as well.

Perhaps he was a Hopalong Cassidy fan - this was something Hoppy used to tell his saddle pals, that to call them "cops" was disrespectful.

My Irish dad always called the police "coppers"...so we did, of course...but not in hearing range of our mom who said that was disrespectful..she said we have to call them "officers"..which we all do when stopped for speeding.
