One, nobody ever contested the factual criticisms of his post-service behavior. Two, he had to abandon his wholly fabricated Christmas in Cambodia story. Three, he had to revise his account of his first Purple Heart.

His reporting for duty shtick was poorly received by many veterans because of the first piece of that. The lumping of all these criticisms under the umbrella of the worst of the Swift Boat stuff has allowed the party and the press to forget that

I don't doubt that both Kerry & his critics got some facts wrong honestly, due to the passage of time & the fog of war. But the Cambodia story was just a flat-out fabrication that he claimed was "seared, seared" in his memory.

There's a chicken & egg question why some of those guys, many of them highly decorated veterans (eg, Bud Day, the nation's most highly decorated vet) became Republicans. O'Neil was a plaintiffs' lawyer.
