Herman Melville published Moby-Dick in 1851. When he died 40 years later, only about 3,200 copies had ever been sold.

Isn’t 3200 copies for 1891 pretty good tho?

The surviving owners of those 3,200 copies were just about halfway through the book at the time.

And he had to take a job as a customs official after his writing career waned. Not quite where you'd expect to find the author of the greatest novel - & one of the greatest works of theology - ever. (Yeah, I know, in the middle the gems are harder to come by, but it's worth it).
