RIP to Robert Hunter, one of the great lyricists for one of the great bands of the rock era. "And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there."

If we're talking "best/most important/greatest" of all time, I think you have to keep it in the '60s because that's where it all really exploded, but I think you could add R.E.M. in here as well if you're pushing for a later group.

Beach Boys, CCR, Aerosmith, REM, and, I know I have my biases, but The Black Crowes are on that list too.

You could probably argue CCR fronted by Fogerty, considering he wrote and sang everything. The Byrds definitely deserve a top 5 spot.

Beach Boys= the greatest American album with Pet Sounds; pound for pound, GD is the greatest American rock band ... and I dont think its particularly close. And American Beauty is a stones throw from Pet Sounds ... and thats damn close.
