RIP to Robert Hunter, one of the great lyricists for one of the great bands of the rock era. "And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there."

The Byrds (certainly the most important/influential of them all), Velvet Underground, Grateful Dead, Beach Boys, maybe add in Creedence. The Doors are atrocious.
-
To me, it's probably the Beach Boys #1 and Dead #2, Creedence #3, & gets tougher after that.

Grateful Dead. But the Allman Brothers when they had both brothers were probably more consistent.
-
Consistency is definitely not what you come to the Dead for. It's more the massive body of work, especially live.
