My dad grew up in Western NY, an hour and a half south of Buffalo, which is the only reason I really know how huge (relative to the rest of the US) it once was. A big center of rail commerce and the Erie Canal brought tons of stuff into its ports. Then came planes & cars.

Also, the death of American manufacturing hit a lot of cities hard, but it hit Buffalo harder than most. Pittsburgh has at least found a way to somewhat soften the economic blow with new industries. Nothing ever came back to Buffalo.
