The other influence is harder to realize. Sounds that were spelled one way in Old English took on the French spelling. So the cw sound in OE becomes qu in some cases, transforming Cwen to queen.

One other thing: whether it was intentional or not, the only word in Churchill's famous "We shall fight on the beaches..." quote that is of French, not English origin, is "surrender".

Yes, I recall watching Boris Johnson use that as an example of Churchill's use of Anglo-Saxon words for rhetorical emphasis.
