Only three players since 1900 had more than three 70-steal seasons: Rickey Henderson (7), Raines (6), Vince Coleman (5). All 18 of those seasons came between 1980 & 1990. (Hall of Famer Billy Hamilton had 6 between 1889-1896, but under the earlier, looser definition of steals).https://twitter.com/Super70sSports/status/1174688991754575872 …

Today in 1984, Tim Raines becomes the first major leaguer to post four straight 70+ stolen base seasons. He'll do it again in 1985 and 1986. pic.twitter.com/VMXydrWEkI

Notably, Rickey Henderson, Tim Raines, & Vince Coleman all had success rates of 75%+ in every season where they stole 70+ bases - Raines, over 80%. These were not guys running at bad percentage rates.

Maury Wills in 1962 had the best base-stealing season ever. 104 steals, 13 caught. Tied w/Rickey Henderson 1985 for highest SB% with 70+ steals, in 27 more attempts. And he led the league in steals BY A MARGIN OF 72.

Wills had no business beating Mays, Aaron & Frank Robinson for the MVP in 1962, but that is still a staggering achievement on the basepaths.

In Wins Above Replacement terms, Wills (6 WAR) & Pee Wee Reese in 1952 (5 WAR) are the only position players to top 4.5 WAR with <5 batting runs AND <5 fielding runs in a season. Wills: 2.6 batting, -2.4 fielding.
