Expansion was still on the table then, with fights over slavery removed as an obstacle. We bought Alaska in 1867, investigated buying Greenland & Iceland in 1868, & there were still proposals to annex Canada until its confederation in mid-1867.

After 1871, the idea of U.S. expansion died off as the international situation stabilized & the country focused on the West. Later acquisitions - Hawaii, the proceeds of the Spanish-American War - were not, at least when acquired, seen as future states.
