America circa 1987-91 was full of this sort of thing.https://twitter.com/TheStalwart/status/1173616534662582273 …

The Michael Crichton novel Rising Sun made me afraid the Japanese were going to eat us alive.

My favorite part of that book was when he introduced a character with a description that more or less said "to be played on screen by Sean Connery."

It was all over a lot of movies, arguably even Die Hard

Interesting how everyone remembers Rising Sun for xenophobia, but nobody mentions the far more positive example of Die Hard:https://twitter.com/jsende/status/1173617839745503233 …

I remember when it came out. Underrated example of normalization: Die Hard, which came out the next year & featured a benevolent & sympathetic Japanese CEO (who is tragically murdered by the terrorists).

Oh hell yes. And the other main character’s description was more or less “to be played on screen by Michael Douglas” but the filmmakers went a different direction.
