also notable that many of those Catholic institutions were created in response to and were affected by state hostility, e.g. Blaine Amendments.

But remember those amendments were to prevent state funding for Catholic education, which has been the Church’s preference in other countries; U.K., Ireland, Italy, Spain

In fact, one impetus was state funding in New York in that era; New York was the nation's largest state AND the closest swing state in national elections.
