7 years later, the southern half of the Dakotas responded by calling their new settlement "Pierre" after a fur trader of French descent. Pierre is now the capital of South Dakota.

Several American state capitals are named after British or American figures, Native American names, or Spanish terms, but offhand, I believe Bismarck is the only one named after a political leader of Continental Europe, let alone one who was then in power.
