Agreed. But the need to strike a universalist-particularist balance would still obtain absent liberalism, as it has for the church in every age.

It seems possible to hold that the best imperium may be preferable to a world of pure ethno-cultural particularism while also noting that bad imperiums are commonplace and that in many contexts it is necessary to champion particularism against their faults.
