Their plan to divide the colonies via the Hudson control in retrospect was not a good one. Since there was so much population relative to now in Canada at the time, it probably made more sense then, as all was viewed as one giant colony belonging to England.

The concept of splitting the colonies at the Hudson was sound, and is basically what Grant did with the Mississippi in 1863. The problem was an inept approach to executing it.
