Dan, if it's an elected official than you can check here: https://projects.propublica.org/politwoops/ And most of the time controversial Tweets are screen-shotted by SOMEONE, especially as there's a lag period bet. the deletion and when they stop showing up on timelines.

I understand the impulse. But I'm a historian. For me it's destroying source material. That'll never sit right.

That being said I can think of more than one interview of politicians making such claims, then being proven liars when the host either posts a screenshot of a Tweet, or even footage of prior comments that show them to be liars...

... seems it should be Political Strategy 101, don't claim "I never said that" unless you're 100% sure you never did. "I don't recall saying that" offers slightly more wiggle room.
