This is predictable banality. Gun control advocates-*read the literature*, not tweets—constantly say that both the Constitution and case law (specifically Scalia’s opinion in Heller) uphold the right to regulate firearms and to limit some kinds of firearms. So permitting (1)https://twitter.com/Neoavatara/status/1168357892531150849 …

I am a notorious squish on guns, though I do support the 2nd amendment. But liberals unable to define what their limiting principle is on what rights they think the 2nd protects is a major problem in compromising on much of anything on this issue.

"Listen to the white papers, ignore the populists" is often not the best guide to what one's opponents will do next.

You equate the right base with the left base. Liberal voters actually support public policy, not anti government gestures of resentment. Background checks isn’t exactly the death of gun rights.

Seriously—what kind if proposal do you seriously would both pass and be constitutional, given this Court. Play it out—what is the “extremist” movement/proposal that keeps you up at night here?

First, you guys completely blew it re health care. Obama just wanted Romneycare and you turned that into The Death of Freedom—Frum warned you. No other conservative party in the world does not support some form of universal coverage. I’ll leave abortion to the side, too

contentious. SSM? Conservatives like @walterolson support it. It is just and humane and diesnt affect anybody’s else’s life. But ok—**specifically** re guns, what do you imagine could be come law and also be constitutional and would also be remotely practical? Serious question.

I really don’t think you have an answer here because the fear would obviously irrational—“taking away the guns!” How is that remotely possible in any way—legally, institutionally, culturally, logistically. That’s facially absurd. So the practical effect is rejecting reforms that

But what is “success” here? The GOP is behind both public opinion and simple policy logic here. What night actually mitigate gun violence. MA shows that permitting does do that—not confiscation, but permitting. How about trying to mitigate the problem? And stay with public

opinion too? And seriously, the no retreat logic completely obtained (and still does! No matter the political cost) on health care. You all said no on everything. Next time, Dems won’t bother schmoozing Grassley or Snow, if she’s still around.
