Main drawback of reading a lot of Civil War era political history: consuming too much out-and-proud racism in one sitting eventually gets nauseating.

Am I totally wrong in this interpretation? It seems like Confederate politicians were the bigger racists and more focused on defending slavery than the military leaders.

The soldiers in general were less political. Their opinions varied, as did their directions after the war.
