I think it's pretty rare, and pretty difficult, in a big and diverse electorate, for a candidate to truly win with a "narrow but united regional or demographic base of support", if you actually look at composition of coalitions and not just red and blue colors on maps.

And also, to the extent that happens, it's not clear to me that Electoral College systems guard against it. Who has the "broader coalition" here? I think that's up for debate, at best. Who wins the "Electoral College"?pic.twitter.com/loAKdFzcM2
