I intend to cast a protest primary vote vs Trump, & would like a real R to back. But if you're actively throwing in behind Joe Walsh, you've learned nothing from Trump & just want in on your own unprincipled, unqualified, undisciplined, bigoted grifter.https://twitter.com/SarahLongwell25/status/1165648921475133440 …

Did you read my thread? I’m not throwing in behind anyone. I’m arguing for opening the door to grace should it be earned. And people who have provided years of aid, comfort, and rationalization for Trump have no moral high ground from which to argue.

I did, and it amounts to "now he's saying what I want to hear." I have fought for years against this instant-folk-hero view of Republican candidates. I will always be for the people who have actually done things. Like - for all his flaws - Sanford. http://baseballcrank.com/archives2/2015/08/politics_laura.php …

No, it’s that he’s apologized and repudiated his past words and there is value in that. I’m not turning him into a folk hero and that’s clear from any honest reading of my thread. I’ll support Sanford as well if he gets in.

Nothing in Walsh's character or history shows that his words alone are any more trustworthy than those of Trump. He's just looking for a new grift because the old one ran out. There is literally no point to replacing Trump with Walsh.

I’m not in a position to evaluate Walsh’s character. But the key difference between him and Trump is that’s he apologized and disavowed his past words and behavior. Trump? Well, we know where he currently stands.

Trump also spent the 2015-16 season disavowing stuff he said before. I'm in a position to evaluate Walsh's character because I have been following politics since 2010 (long before that, in fact).

A lot can happen. As of now, he is not, so a primary challenge is a moral statement. Which is precisely why I have no intention of voting for Joe Walsh.

Right, but I wasn’t talking about voting. In terms of policy I’m much closer to a Sanford or even Weld than I am to Walsh. I hope more people get in the race. My thread is about how we grapple with forgiveness and it’s dishonest to present it as otherwise.

I'm not so easily taken in. Converts are welcome, but they need to prove themselves & don't get to be in charge.

That’s exactly what I say in my thread. That I’m staying open to him potentially proving himself.

Sure. But by deeds, not words. All he will do between now & 2020 is words.
