What is the opposite of "act" - leave in place the existing rules? Bear in mind that policymakers had to act without social science for most of human history. The whole field of political philosophy developed without it.

Yes, it’s an argument for doing nothing. And for the vast majority of human history, virtually all choices made by policy makers were bad ones. I’m not sure Henry VIII or Julius Caesar are data points in your favor.

Aren’t conservatives supposed to weary of change because of the limits of human knowledge? How about we expand those limits a bit before trying new policies?

As a general principle, I agree - as noted - that the presumption begins with the traditional, established order. What I question is the idea that things falsifiable by social science are the only considerations that can ever be taken into account.

Nobody here said “only.” But if you want to achieve social goal X, the prudent thing to do is to lean most heavily on social science regarding X. Otherwise, you probably have ~0 chance of getting X.

I think this overestimates the overlap between the things that are important and the things that social science can reliably quantify.

Maybe, but this brings us back to the beginning: Prove it.

Which brings me back to my starting point as well: proof, in a democracy, need not emanate from social science; it may also be drawn from the traditions and accumulated experience of the common man.

Democratic votes don’t produce truth, they just select politicians. Running with your argument: Since voters don’t care about social cohesion and few even know what it means, does that mean social cohesion is not important?

Just popping in to say this is the most vague argument I’ve ever seen on Twitter. Carry on, gentlemen.

Well, data - its the use, abuse, & limitations - is a longstanding bugaboo of mine, for a variety of reasons & covering a multitude of contexts. I agree that at some point it's important to get down to concrete examples. I have a long-unfinished essay on the topic.

If you can’t appeal to evidence, I think you’d better have a really compelling reason why not for the rest of us to believe your claim. I haven’t seen such a reason presented. This is just an empirical question to me, so happy to change my opinion when I learn more.
