There’s a non-zero chance that sticking out the trade war, on top of other economic headwinds, pushes the US into a recession in time for the election, making re-election much more difficult.

And you've just outlined Trump's strategy in a short tweet. It's got to be fixed now or it never will be.

The whole problem with this is that China has probably incurred worse economic pain and now has a complete nightmare occurring in its wealthiest "territory" in Hong Kong. Let's leave the vacuum here, a deal would do the Chinese good too, and they know it.
-
Or the alternative is that the Chinese could crush the Hong Kong resistance while the protestors were killed waving American flags and singing our national anthem. What a great look that would be to Chinese trading partners!

Trump wants less trade (only way to zero out the trade deficit) on top of China concessions. Lose-lose. Room for new President to say give concessions and we’ll get you more trade, net win.
