In 1852, the Free Soil candidate, John Hale, got 62 votes in Delaware. This was more than twice Franklin Pierce's 25-vote margin of victory in the state over Winfield Scott.

So fringe 3rd party candidates can change the outcome of an election. A better more recent example is the 2 presidential runs of Ross Perot. He gave us both of Bill Clinton's terms.
