"Professionalizing" ambassadors would mean they no longer work for the president - another chip away at our democracy in favor of the unelected administrative state. But from what I can see, Warren's actual plan is just generalities: https://medium.com/@teamwarren/revitalizing-diplomacy-a-21st-century-foreign-service-2d9d195698f …https://twitter.com/Nay_A_Smith/status/1164003856356978689 …

No. But...compared to what? That's my point. See the rest of the thread.

So by this logic you wouldn't want a trained diplomat, like a Richard Holbrooke, or even a very wise politician like a James Baker, but you'd be thrilled with whatever mannequin was on Fox that morning?

In 1848, French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps negotiated peace with the Roman Republic. It was a fine piece of negotiation. But he did not have the backing of his government, which disavowed it & reopened hostilities. He never worked as a diplomat again. Consider the lesson.

That's great, but tell me how a system where a morning news anchor almost ended up the US Ambassador to the UN is one worth defending.

UN Ambassador is a different role, more like a Cabinet post. Which means it should still be filled by someone who speaks for the POTUS, but also that the Senate should scrutinize their qualifications. Not take control from POTUS.

That's not finally the point. Ok I'll speak the language you pretend to: What makes a better baseball manager: an experienced manager or a drunk in the stands who is friends with the owner?

The manager's job is not, principally, to represent the views of the owner. Apples & oranges.

But if they're only being picked because they're friends with the owner, who are they going to end up loyal to? The team and the owner are not the same thing.
