"100% a republican figure" is a serious overstatement: 1) lifelong flirtation w/both parties; 2) more D than R donor almost every year from 1990 thru 2009 3) mulled a run as a D in 2004. Romney pursued his endorsement precisely bc he was not seen in 2012 as a reliable partisan R.https://twitter.com/swin24/status/1163557333873676289 …

He was 100% a republican figure before he ran, why else would Romney actively seek his public endorsement https://twitter.com/jaredlholt/status/1163548617749274624 …

Mr. Crank, here's an article by Ben Shapiro from 2011 about how Donald Trump should run against Barack Obama, citing Trump's birtherism as the reason.https://townhall.com/columnists/benshapiro/2011/04/13/the-magic-of-donald-trump-n1395003 …

With respect to Ben, that was a terrible idea in 2011, & I'd have laughed at the suggestion then. The buzz when CPAC let him onstage was "what is this guy doing here?" & "who did he pay off to get in?" The fear in 2012 & 2015 was that he'd run Independent again.

Do you find it odd that Ben is claiming that no mainstream Republican supported that nonsense (despite many other examples, Meadows, etc.), while also being a person who wrote an article supporting the current Republican president specifically because he supported that nonsense?

It was still a terrible idea in 2016, which is why it was so welcomed by Repubs

Well Ok it was a terrible idea. But the fact that Trump was floated by so many GOP-friendly scribes blows up your point.

It's really, really funny watching conservatives disown the R 2016 nominee, simply in order to make a silly argument by Ben Shapiro stick.
