Just read through the Nikole Hannah-Jones opening essay of the NYT 1619 Project, and I didn't find it anti-American, but rather, an effort to explain how black Americans can take pride in being American in spite of history of slavery + racist terrorism. (1)

I think it's fair to acknowledge that the legacy of slavery + 100 years that followed, made the experience of black Americans different than that of any other group in the nation, including immigrants who encountered prejudice but nonetheless came here of their own volition. (2)

So I read Hannah-Jones as explaining how black Americans can reconcile patriotism with their history by taking pride in the contributions of their ancestors, esp when it comes to fighting for the U.S. to more faithfully live up to the promise of its founding, for all people (3).

That said, I really wish this statement were more thoroughly backed up, bc it's contrary to everything I've read: "one of the primary reasons the colonists decided to declare their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery." (4)

I've read a lot of contemporary letters, essays, and history about the factors leading to the demand for independence, and had not previously come across idea that colonists' fear that Britain would abolish slavery was a factor, let alone a "primary" one (5)

I guess it's theoretically possible that they could have been freaked out by Somersett's case, which was two years before the Declaration of Independence ... but about 6-8 years after things had really gotten going in Massachusetts.

The decision was two years after the Boston Massacre, which the same author identifies as the first battle of the Revolution. Slavery was banned in Massachusetts in 1783, fifty years before Parliament banned it in the British colonies.

Four years, no? Thought it was 1774.

But the rest of the colonies didn't have to go along with Massachusetts. I think it is obviously false that Massachusetts, where abolitionist sentiment was already stronger than in London, declared independence because they were afraid of abolition ... but Virginia? Georgia?

Doing some digging, this talking point seems to be from a book endorsed by [OMINOUS MUSIC] Howard Zinnhttps://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/slave-nation/ …

I would have to read the book to develop an opinion. Perhaps I shall.
