The case for doing this as a newspaper project is one thing; the case for touting it in a presidential campaign is entirely another. Casting your focus this far in the past is not a winning message in the 21st century. https://twitter.com/_Drew_McCoy_/status/1163240814513991681 …

Mr. McLaughlin, you are smart and educated. May I offer for your consideration:
#1861project. How the United States broke the back of human slavery by force of arms & launched its destiny of international moral exceptionalism. I propose this is a more accurate theme for study.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Look one of the founding principles of the country, "All men are created equal" was understood at the time, by the men who formulated it, to include *only* white males. So to the extent that our country was founded on principles like that, yes, the country was founded on racism.

Pretty much every western country was racist at that time.

If your economy was dependent on racialized slavery, your country was founded in racism. Facts don't care about your feelings.

“Acknowledging racism isn’t a winning message” lol crank you need to do some soul searching before you start running apologetics for slave owners again

I celebrate the great leap our founders made in liberty and I accept the fact that embedding systemic racism in the Constitution was essential to the compromise that made our nation possible. The formation of the more perfect union is ongoing.

In case you’ve never read the US constitution, I recommend doing so. In multiple places it expressly protects the ownership of humans, including excepting from the basic rule of amendment any amendment aimed at overturning the Int’l slave trade prior to 1808.

People can be racist. Policies (& laws) can be racist. However, saying "[a] country is racist" is a vague statement whose best purpose is starting arguments.
