Not controversial that only one group is "the ones"?

No, African Americans are obviously not the only ones. They were just most conspicuously left out (along with Native Americans) and their struggle to attain the rights guaranteed by the Constitution is an elemental part of America's history and identity.

You suggested that it's the only part that matters. Maybe that was just an imprudent rhetorical flourish, but it reflects the attitude that seems to pervade this project. It's always good to add depth to history; not so good to abandon perspective.

As a direct response to Erickson’s claim - that all of this means illegitimacy and necessitates revolution - the flourish - “the ones who...” - made sense. But not as a stand alone statement where “the ones who” mean “the only ones who.”

I actually teed up an addendum after rereading it bc I worried it would come across as saying African Americans were “the only” ones to make democracy work. But then I got distracted by some spam caller from Utah.

Fair. Look, I think this is a legitimate topic, but the narrative framing here is ideological in a way that we should expect to spark pushback.

I think the actual essay pieces are better and more nuanced than the introductory framing - which is to be expected, but is particularly important in this case.

And of course, 98% of the political debate around the series, both for & against, will be from people who haven't read past the headline framing.
