If I read this right, that's 82%-18% for Lincoln over McClellan in Wisconsin military ballots, representing most of Lincoln's 11-point margin in the state.https://twitter.com/PollsAndVotes/status/1161845466931351552 …

Also, Lincoln's generals had actually won great battles by the Fall of '64.
Yes, Grant and Sherman turned it around. Lincoln expected to lose reelection before that.
In retrospect, of course, he may have been wrong about that. Maybe it was never gonna be close.
Not just Lincoln. Quite a lot of doubt, active efforts to dump him from the nomination, replaced by Grant. See relevant chapters (ch 21) in Chrenow’s Grant, which credits Sherman’s victory at Atlanta. Not enough tracking polls to be sure though.
Lincoln's view that the race was close led to the worst decision of his presidency, choosing Andrew Johnson as his running mate. The tipping point state in the Electoral College was Illinois, which Lincoln won 54-46.
I sometimes think about how reconstruction would have played out under a President Hamlin.
