A healthy society should have: -A self-confident culture -A strong native birthrate -A steady & diverse inflow of immigrants -Thriving non-governmental institutions -Strong norms favoring linguistic, cultural & economic assimilation We used to call these ideas a "melting pot."

Compared to 100 years ago, the stock of immigrants today is more likely to speak English. Because of the many misdesigns of California's polity. There is no reason otherwise why Hispanic immigrants should follow a different long-term arc than the Italians, or maybe the Irish.
