1-May 1862, Abe Lincoln goes to the peninsula to see what McClellan's up to (spoiler: nothing). Worried about the CSS Virginia (Merrimac, the ironclad) attacking DC. Sees McClellan's done nothing to disturb its anchorage; Lincoln's so mad he slams his stovepipe hat on the ground.

Lee did say McClellan was his most capable foe. Though I take it to mean that McClellan made so few mistakes given he took so few chances on making any.

What is surprising is that little MAC wasn’t even the worst general of the army of the Potomac and that he had more than one ahead of him on that score. And I would say only one better than him.

Well, would Lincoln, et al., have done such superb scouting work, and would Lincoln have personally ordered the raid, if he hadn’t been so bad at his job? I think McClellan deserves some credit here for bringing the best out of others! Look what he did for that drunk, Grant!
