I love James Stewart. I think he's the greatest of all American film actors, and that he does more things better than anyone else. But no actor is ABSOLUTELY perfect, and I do think that his lack of strong sexual magnetism is—very relatively speaking—one of his few shortcomings.

You ever hear Donna Reed’s daughter tell the story of their first kiss in It’sAWondferulLife?

He was fresh out of The Army and believe it or not, he never had kissed a girl before. Many takes. Lots of blushing! Sure translated well on film, didn’t it!

I really hate to tell you this, but there is no possibility whatsoever that there's any truth in that story. Stewart may have been fresh out of the Army, but he had been involved with a great many women before the war, including Marlene Dietrich and Olivia de Havilland.

Yeah, but did he tell Donna Reed that, and did she believe it?

And did telling her that enhance her performance (and his) in that scene?

I can totally picture him "ah, go easy on me Donna, you know, I I I haven't ever actually kissed a gal before."

And with a face and demeanor like his, who wouldn’t believe him?
