Hmm. Proper tirades should have included the Soviet crackdown on Poland, their invasion of Afghanistan, and Jimmy Peanut's powerful boycott of the Moscow Olympics. IIRC Time had a cover wondering if the Presidency was too big for one man. It was too big for Jimmy.

I was 13 when Reagan was elected. I never remember once hearing race as an issue. Rather I remember Iran, the USSR and the economy. Also Reagan tapped into Americans natural optimism (the best is yet to be) while Carter turned into an unsmiling scold.
