If this is your standard, you're not going to find a lot of moments of national unity. We've had at most a handful of presidents who were good at publicly admitting mistakes while in office, & fewer of those in the modern media age. Certainly not Obama or W.https://twitter.com/WillMcAvoyACN/status/1158748585481187333 …

    Dan McLaughlin added,

    Will McAvoy @WillMcAvoyACN
Trump isn't interested in uniting the nation. Unity requires the ability to admit when you are wrong, when you have made mistakes, and one of the hallmarks of Trump and one of the reasons why Trump is so popular is that he refuses to acknowledge his mistakes are mistakes.

Moreover, presidents who do admit mistakes are typically doing so as a way of defusing scandals or explaining foreign policy reversals. How many sitting presidents have apologized for being wrong in how they criticized domestic political opponents?

Trump's pre-presidential career was, if anything, characterized by a cold-blooded willingness to abandon prior decisions & commitments. I do think his inability to admit error hurts his decisionmaking (he needs scapegoats), but it has little to do with his public messaging.

Our society actively discourages powerful people from admitting error. Maybe has something to do with modern media where it can be repeated ad nauseam in lieu of actual policy discussions.

Indeed, I would argue that Bush's refusal to admit an error in with regards to the war in Iraq was a major fault of his Presidency and helped exasperate existing divisions that predated him and exist still today.

Bush just going on TV and saying "hey, we're wrong" would not have been well-received by his political opponents. But he was also allergic to *defending* past decisions. His inability to look back at all hurt him.
