it has been underappreciated that the US was already in conflict with the Soviet Union and a quick end to the war was desired to minimize Soviet participation in East Asian politics

Last paragraph: "a-bombs = lasting peace, so, be like Truman." You're making the same mistake you criticize: failure to consider the wider context. 1. All of Japan's major cities had already been bombed to smithereens by conventional means--method of obliteration was ... 1

1/ The Boston Globe used to print periodic screeds from James Carroll (don’t know if they still do...) One year (early 2000’s?) Carroll penned some awful diatribe bemoaning the anniversary of dropping the bomb and wondering if it was all worth it (Carroll thinking it was not)

2/ I felt compelled to respond and the Boston Globe printed my letter along with half a dozen strong responses against Carroll’s position. Carroll clearly had issues with his Air Force General father that he was working out via op ed articles

3/ But I stated I had no problem living under the peace afforded by dropping the bomb and doing so also rapidly concluded the war of aggression initiated by the Empire of Japan Mine was one of half a dozen letters to the editor in response/opposition to Carroll’s article
