I confess I couldn't imagine wanting to live in Manhattan, where I've worked for 23 years. But a lot of the people who love the Manhattan lifestyle would have loved it at the nadir of its 70s shabbiness. It's not just about shiny buildings.

I lived and worked in Manhattan for four years in the '80s. Couldn't get out fast enough. About a decade later, while living in CO, was offered a job in Manhattan that would have tripled my salary. I passed. Not enough money in the world to get me to go back.
