Given their ages, I can forgive a certain amount of moral cowardice by Petain & Hindenburg. But of course, both have much to answer for that goes beyond just moral cowardice.

I am not a fan of Petain's collaboration or Chamberlain's efforts at Munich. But we should keep in mind that the horror of WWI and related carnage was a powerful motivator for both of them esp Chamberlain.
