Given their ages, I can forgive a certain amount of moral cowardice by Petain & Hindenburg. But of course, both have much to answer for that goes beyond just moral cowardice.

I believe DeGaulle said something to the effect that he had never changed his mind, and that he believed Petain was an honorable man. He simply died around 1935 but didn’t know it.
