So we can’t aim the sentiment at everyone? Why are some people immune to what isn’t a racist sentiment?

When it's specifically framed not as "love it or leave it" but "go back where you came from," to people who came from here.

Can we distinguish between "love it or leave it" and :go back to where you came from?" One is a question of love of country that is not racially linked; the later is one that implies a less than American heritage or citizenship that can and often is racially linked.

And..... Trump told Natural Born Citizens to go back... so thanks for making that clear!

This is very true and that’s because in politics you have to watch for perception issues. They are Bernie Sanders in skirts and they’re using the race card to deflect criticism of their policies. So you can’t in anyway shape or form fall into their little game. Trump did.

Yes, Dan, “love it or leave it” was used on the white hippies only because they were white

I’m really conflicted on this one. On one hand yes it’s a bad look in our hyper polarized political culture and with Trump in particular. But honestly as a suburban, lean conservative Mom, I’ve often felt this about people who bash America. “Why do you stay if we are so bad??”
-
I’ve felt this over the years about all groups of people: white, black, red, green, native, foreign. I just don’t understand the mindset of “the US is literally Hitler” people, who were here way before trump and will be here way after.

So, know your audience and be especially careful when talking about people of color. Especially the anti-Semites. Did I recap the new rules O.K?

I am confused. If the phrase was used against white hippies then, why would using it now against a non-white person imply they are less American than the white hippies? If anything, that would be an indication that race is not the driving force behind the slogan.
