"Literally zero people have made" the argument that the 2016 result discredits the Electoral College. Also: https://twitter.com/brianbeutler/status/1152663127873527809 …pic.twitter.com/Vy2LfaYMpY

Since folks are kicking around arguments about the Electoral College again, I've previously written a piece @NRO & two long threads on the topic. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1108025352062992384 … https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1124753911972278273 … https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/04/what-the-electoral-college-saves-us-from/ …

      29. Sure. Lots of things would change about how elections are conducted, who runs, etc., and lots more rules would require changing. Which is why it's silly to critique the current rules with national popular vote figures https://twitter.com/JoeyTeevens/status/1124753308147691521 …

"There are no possible arguments in favor of the American system of government as it has existed for two centuries" is a take that says more about the person writing it than it does to engage with the issue.https://twitter.com/brianbeutler/status/1152668227757121536 …

The argument against the electoral college is that everyone's vote should count equally. The arguments for the electoral college are so shitty that only daft fools make them when EC/NPV mismatches happen to go their way, and everyone points and laughs at their nonsense. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1152665851469934592 …

I edited point #2 to track my original article (some folks objected that the French system would qualify). Fact remains: progressive claim there are no possible counterarguments to a national popular vote, yet nearly every major democracy uses a different system than that.pic.twitter.com/ubXk7oRDRa

I'm content to rest on the American experience as validation for the American system. But if you argue that the American system is a uniquely bad form of government, you should look at what other democracies - less durable than our own - have done.

I remember the Obama & Clinton presidencies, & to some extent Carter. They were not characterized by widespread conservative agitation to change the rules by which presidents are elected.

If there's one thing we've learned about the modern republican party, is that principle is no impediment to attaining power. If the GOP, not democrats, had lost two elections when the GOP won the popular vote, you'd better believe reps would be agitating to abolish the EC.

No, but they did try and remove one because he lied about getting a bj and I remember widespread agitation to have another removed under the false and disingenuous proposition that he wasn’t born in the US.

Lol. Conservatives didn’t change the rules. They were content to simply label Obama a foreign-born Marxist and therefore, under the rules, illegitimate.

To be fair, Bill had a plurality twice. Not exactly a loss but not a majority either.

maybe that's because obama and clinton actually got more votes than the people they ran against?
