Outside of the Wiregrass and Huntsville congressional districts and one 1980 Senate term for Jerry Denton (lost in '86 to then-vicious Dem Dick Shelby) Republicans couldn't get elected dogcatcher in Alabama. The real statewide election was still the Democrat primary.

Huntsville district stayed Dem until 2010. I think 2 of 7 districts were consistently GOP in the 1980’s.
