There are so many inherently theatrical moments in military/political history that modern Hollywood could mine if it wanted,https://twitter.com/pptsapper/status/1148587485347352576 …

Another battle that could hardly be more theatrical, but we can guess why it would never be filmed: the Siege of Vienna in 1683, concluding with the city's relief by the largest cavalry charge in history. (That one, too, was more or less aped by Tolkien).

To make matters worse, the Japanese steel deck carriers were hothouses in a tropic summer. The crewmen were thus allowed to work in shorts and t-shirts instead of very hot flame retardant gear.

You might be talking about Rick Halsey Best. I think later in life, he worked for RAND Corp. By the way, he's the dude on the right.pic.twitter.com/Tq6k15zIyi

Whoops! Rick should be "Richard". My bad.

Theatrical or divine? There were several make-or-break moments at Midway that seem the result of random chance. Two others include the fact that US search planes found the Japanese fleet in the first place and Yamamoto’s Ill-fated decision to rearm planes, leaving them exposed.
-
And McCluskey's search planes then followed a straggling IJN ship's wake straight to their fleet. Btw, Yamamato wasn't on site; it was Nagumo who made the fatal decision to rearm.

I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters.

Walter Lord covers this in his book on Midway, “Incredible Victory” He said we had no right to win. We were out gunned in every way and the smart money would be on the Japanese Yet the tide of the Pacific war turned on the actions in about 30 minutes… A pivotal moment in time

The odds at Midway were much better for the Americans than people think. The US Aviatiors were professionals trained prior to the war and Japanese carriers were woeful in fire fighting and armor. The best book on Midway is “Shattered Sword”.
