I'm excited to see Hollywood finally coming back to Midway, which is such a film-friendly battle that George Lucas basically aped the climactic run at the Japanese carriers for the assault on the Death Star.

At Midway, one of the American pilots even miraculously dropped a bomb that went straight down the Akagi's flight elevator, a one-in-a-million shot that swiftly doomed the carrier by detonating inside it.

Another battle that could hardly be more theatrical, but we can guess why it would never be filmed: the Siege of Vienna in 1683, concluding with the city's relief by the largest cavalry charge in history. (That one, too, was more or less aped by Tolkien).

I'm getting ready to write something in that vein now, in fact. Still researching.

And they’re only just now getting around to making a movie about this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Castle_Itter …

YO! I just learned about that a month ago. "Simple History" did a very nice video on this. It's succinct - about 4 minutes in length. That's an intriguing story! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0UwLhziocc …

AGREED! I never tire of cinematic depictions of those dramatic moments in military/ political history. Films like "84 Charlie Mopic" (1989) and "The Bedford Incident" (1965) are among my faves!
-
I know "The Bedford Incident" is not real but the backdrop of the story is. It's like "Firefox" (1984). As far as I can remember, no American Air Force pilot entered the U.S.S.R. as a spy, and stole a high tech fighter jet. However, the Cold War setting for that film did happen.

The only proviso is that white males cannot be depicted positively. Only as over-the-top villains or clowns. Ooops, that eliminates so many inherently theatrical moments in military/political history that modern Hollywood must resort to remakes of comic books.
-
Nope. Comic remakes won't be exempted from this astoundingly bizarre criteria in spite of the fact that medium contains so many original stories which feature non-White characters. It's quite sad. Nonetheless, I wish there would be a remake of this comic. This story is GREAT!pic.twitter.com/0rLvLuZY7O
