Final note on the 1852 Frederick Douglass speech: in 1852, slavery seemed to be winning. 1850 saw a new Fugitive Slave Law to appease threats of secession. Democrats, the pro-slave party, were sweeping to such a decisive victory the country was momentarily returned to 1 party.

Kaepernick used Douglass to say America hasn’t lived up to its ideals. Barnes used Kaepernick to say Douglass implied America is the worst country in the world. They’re both greatly distorting Douglass.
