Many people seem to forget that slavery was a normal way of life since the dawn of the human race. And that the West were the first to stand up and put an end to slavery. Though more people are enslaved around the world today than back in 1776.

Was he really a leading figure in the demise of the slave trade? Wasn’t that mostly decided in London?

The British crackdown preceded our ban & is part of the story, but Jefferson was denouncing it years before that, backed a Virginia ban in 1778, called for its end in the 1807 SOTU & signed the federal ban into law.
