Jefferson may have been economically incentivized to oppose the slave trade, but he was its consistent & implacable foe from 1776 to 1808, & led its demise in America. As atrocious as American slavery was, the transatlantic slave trade was worse.

It’s a good thing MLK wasn’t an advocate for women’s rights.

Fair. But weirdly embedded is the lack of support for the celebration of emancipation, which to some is actually a huge deal.

You should be able to celebrate both.

first possible moment was 6 years into his presidency. That's a long moment.

Per Article I Section 9 in the Constitution, no van could go into effect prior to 1808. The bill Jefferson signed into law went into effect on January 1st, 1808. Would have made no difference to pass it earlier. So, yes: the first possible moment.

Also, Jefferson basically built Charlottesville. That being said, as a transplanted Virginian, we should probably think about getting rid of ‘Lee-Jackson Day’.

I suspect Jefferson was a man of great ideas but also a man who enjoyed a lifestyle that was dependent on slavery so he did all kinds of ethical and mental gymnastics to excuse his lifestyle. Definitely wrong & hypocritical but sadly not an uncommon behavior among human beings

everyone’s life was dependent on slavery in those days- minus the slaves. Context of the time period is so important. He was probably 1 in 100 who questioned slavery in his day and age.
