1. For all the heat expended on mischief in the electoral system (which will be with us as long as there is politics) the fact remains that in modern America, its effects are all very marginal. Where we actually lose self-government is in the insulation of decisions from voters.

3. The conservative project for democracy is ultimately twofold: on the one hand, to preserve the deliberative aspects that slow down democratic rule, but on the other, to roll back progressive institutions that eliminate ultimate democratic control.

4. Anybody who claims that Republicans are the ones who don't like democracy is willfully ignoring the broader progressive project to hand power to "expert" agencies & "expert" activist judges, & to insulate budgetary decisions from annual legislative purview.
