Being more of a hard-core civil libertarian, I think Goldwater was right. The Civil Rights Act should have been passed--but only after being rewritten to deal with his concerns.

I'm not necessarily saying that the law was perfect. But on balance, given the binary choice of Yes or No, I'd have voted Yes. The situation in the mid-1960s demanded it.

Goldwater anticipated exactly what you state Dan. He actually had ethics, he spoke the truth & his record on civil rights beats the hell out of all the 60s democrats who stained his record. He integrated the Arizona National Guard when others were afraid to. His record stands.
